FIRST EDITION. THE ZOOLOGICAL PART OF HUMBOLDT AND BONPLAND'S 'SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY OF AMERICA' (Norman 1111). Humboldt and Bonpland's six-year research expedition through America was undertaken between 1799 and 1804 and 'amassed exhaustive data in a wide array of fields from meterolgy to ethnography, and gathered 60,000 plant specimens, 6,300 of which had been hitherto unknown in Europe' (Norman); the journals were published under the general title of Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du nouveau continent, fait en 1799 ... 1804 (Paris: 1805-37, 24 vols), subdivided into six sections covering different fields. The Recueil d'observations de zoologie forms the second part of the work, and was originally issued between 1804 and 1809; this issue was then cancelled and the part was published in the present form (of which pp.1-309 correspond to the earlier issue). The majority of the 20 articles that comprise the work were written by Humboldt, with others contributed by Cuvier, Valenciennes and Latreille. Anker 218; BM(NH) II, pp.890-1; Nissen ZBI 2048; Ronsil 1425; Sabin 33755; Wood p.394. (2)
