Details
LEAR, Edward. Views in the Seven Ionian Islands. London: the author, 1863.

2° (496 x 336mm). Tinted lithographic additional title and 20 plates by and after Lear printed by Day & Son. (Some spotting and browning, some text leaves and plates stained, occasional marginal tears.) Original green cloth gilt by Day & Son with their ticket, upper board lettered in gilt, borders in blind to both boards (a little marked and rubbed, tears on spine, disbound). Provenance: Allan Nevill, Lear's godson, and thence by descent to the present owner (see note to lot 111).

FIRST EDITION. 'Lear's first visit to Corfu was made in 1848 when he stayed with George Bowen. ... From 1855 to 1858 and from 1861 to 1864 he resided more or less continuously in Corfu with visits to other places. He knew all the islands quite well: the drawings in this work were made in the spring of 1863. Their publication was planned to take advantage of the cessation of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864. It was also intended that the publication of the Views would pave the way for Lear's intended 'Topography of Greece'. But contemporary sales were not good, and the 'Topography of Greece' never appeared' (Blackmer). Blackmer 987.
