MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard (1830-1904). Animal Locomotion. An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements 1872-1885. Philadelphia: The University of Pennsylvania, 1887.
Oblong broadsheets (470 x 600mm). Title printed in red and black. 100 collotype plates by Muybridge printed by the Photo-Gravure Company, with printed titles and copyright information, inkstamp-numbered, comprising: 85 of male and female humans engaging in various activities; 10 of horses galloping, being ridden and drawing carriages; 5 of various animals. (Title lightly marked, occasional light spotting or marking, mainly marginal, one plate torn, another with marginal tear.) Contemporary half dark-brown morocco over cloth, upper board lettered in gilt, spine titled in gilt (a little rubbed and scuffed at extremities), contemporary roan portfolio with gilt morocco lettering-piece on upper panel (worn). Provenance: Library of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. RARE; A FINE AND COMPLETE SUBSCRIPTION COPY OF MUYBRIDGE'S CHEF-D'OEUVRE, a work that -- like Stubbs' The Anatomy of the Horse (see lot 135) -- is as important in the field of science as in that of art. Although the complete set of images for Animal Locomotion totalled 781 plates in 11 volumes, only 37 complete sets were produced (cf. E. Muybridge Complete Human and Animal Locomotion ed. A.V. Mozley (New York: 1979, 3 vols), I, p. vii); the work was issued by subscription, and the prospectus for the work states that 'each copy [is] to contain One Hundred Plates, as described in the prospectus' at a cost of $100, the plates to be selected by the subscriber after examining one of the complete sets deposited 'in one of the Art Institutions or Libraries of Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Washington, and other large cities of the United States' (prospectus, reproduced figs 20-24, op.cit.). Many of the subscription sets of 100 plates were subsequently broken up, and only two sets of 100 or more plates are recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975. A list of the plates in the present volume is available upon request. Roosens and Salu 7236.
