CATESBY, Mark (1682-1749). Hortus Europae Americanus: or, A Collection of 85 curious Trees and Shrubs, the produce of North America; adapted to the climates and soils of Great Britain, Ireland, and most parts of Europe, &c. London: J. Millan, 1767.
Large 4° (395 x 300mm). Uncut. 62 plants pictured on 17 hand-coloured engraved plates. (Light worming to inner margins of first quire, some light soiling). Old half calf (spine and extremities worn, covers discoloured). Provenance: S.G. (initials stamped on title; title also with indistinct ownership inscription).
FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE TITLE.. The first edition of this work was issued in 1763 under the title Hortus Britanno-Americanus: or, A Curious Collection of Trees and Shrubs. For the second issue the original title was cancelled and the present title tipped onto the remaining stub. Auction records record only one copy of this second issue (these rooms, 24 November 1976, lot 139), and two copies of the 1763 issue. 'Catesby was still working on his Hortus not long before he died, but it was not published until fourteen years later, when the printer John Ryall issued it with a dedication to Henry Seymer (1714-1785), the Dorset naturalist ... When John Millan reissued the Hortus in 1767, changing the title a little to aim it at all Europe and not just Britain, the dedication, signed by Ryall and dated 1763, remained unchanged. The illustrations are closely related to the larger ones of the Natural History of Carolina, but they are not identical ... the text is also related to the Natural History, but since the Hortus concentrated on plants there was room for more detailed information in the descriptions' (Oak Spring Sylva p. 53). Cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p. 87; Henrey III, 545; cf. Hunt II, 578; cf. Nissen BBI 338; Oak Spring Sylva 15.
