FERRARI, Giovanni Battista (1584-1655). De Florum Cultura libri IV. Rome: excudebat Stephanus Paulinus, 1633.

4° (240 x 172mm). Collation: a4, π1, A-Z8, Aa-Ii8, Kk6, Ll4, Mm4. Engraved title, 44 full-page engraved illustrations, one engraved plate, by A.M. Variana, Pietro dal Cortona, Guido Reni and others. (Lacking final blank Mm4 and possibly the engraved 'frontispiece', 5 of the full-page illustrations and about 10 text leaves browned.) Old sheep-backed marbled paper over limp vellum. Provenance: P.M.B.E.T. (early ink stamped initials within a shield surmounted by a Cardinal's hat, on title).

[?]FIRST EDITION. A fine unsophisticated copy of the 'first floral book of importance that was published in Italy' (E.A. Bunyard). There are two possible settings of this work: one is described in detail by Hunt (number 222), a second was apparently first recorded in the Plesch catalogue (lot 259). The present copy seems to conform to the Plesch copy and 'It seems likely ... that this is the first edition' (Plesch), rather than the Hunt setting. The final eight leaves of the Hunt copy are in a single gathering (Ll1-8), the present copy includes two gatherings of four (Ll1-4 and Mm1-4, but lacking the final blank). The Hunt copy includes an 'engraved frontispiece on [A1] recto'. In the present copy [A1] has text ('Index Capitum') on both recto and verso. The Hunt copy includes 45 'full-page engraved plates.. in text'. The present copy includes 44 illustrations (all of which form part of the collation of the text) and one plate bound between Aa6 and Aa7. Given these differences it seems possible that the 'frontispiece' is not required in this issue. Cf. E.A. Bunyard 'Some Early Italian Gardening Books' in Journal R.H.S. (1923), pp.180-181; cf. Hunt 222 (different collation); Nissen BBI 620.
