NATURE PRINTING -- J.BAXTER. An album of prints with title on spine 'Nature Printed Flowers' [N.p: circa 1803-]1810.

2° (390 x 240mm). 295 pages with direct transfer prints of approximately 415 specimens in black (one printed in green), 13 with touches of hand-colouring, many on smaller cut out pieces of paper mounted, the majority with identifying manuscript inscriptions in a ?single hand, generally giving the Latin binomial or common name or both. Extra-illustrated with an ALS from J.B. Thompson to 'My dear Baxter' dated 1871, and a transcription of part of an article in the 'Times Literary Supplement' for September 1965, referring to the sale of another manuscript for £450 in a Sotheby's sale of Phillips material. Modern cloth, black leather lettering-piece to spine, by Janet Gunster (two associated endleaves loosely inserted). Provenance: J. Baxter (inscription dated 1810 on loosely inserted endleaf); G. Cobb (inscription dated '18' on loosely inserted endleaf).

AN IMPORTANT AND RELATIVELY EARLY EXAMPLE OF NATURE-PRINTING. A wide-ranging selection produced using some form of direct transfer method - the specimens have been inked and then a print taken from the sample. The date when this album was compiled was in the middle of a period when the science of botany took giant strides forward - with the Linnean method of taxonomy providing the descriptive tools, the scientific community, both professional and 'amateur', were stimulated by the huge range of new plants arriving from the Americas, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Although the number of non-British species in the present album is limited, it nonetheless is a concrete result of the informed enthusiasm that was so prevalent amongst the amateurs of the time.
