Ha primum in lucem edidit, concinnis descriptionibus, & observantionibus, aeneisque tabulis illustravit Joannes Burmannus. Amsterdam & Leiden: 1755-1760.
10 parts in one volume, 2° (413 x 252mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of Burmann by J. Houbraken after Jan Maurits Quinkhard, 263 plates, 262 line engravings on copper, 1 wood-cut with manuscript numeration 'Tab. XXV.*' and title 'SJDA foliis condato - accuminatis, serrulatis'. (Plates numbered XCIII-XCVI and CXXVI-CLV with overall brown toning.) Contemporary calf gilt, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with elaborate repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools (joints, corners and head and foot of spine repaired, some scuffing). Provenance: 'JJ' (monogram on early engraved book-plate).
FINE COPY INTERNALLY OF A WORK CONTAINING PLATES THAT 'ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO STUDENTS OF WEST INDIAN FLORA' (Hunt). 'This is a Plumier first edition brought out a half a century after the great French botanist's death' (Hunt). Father Plumier made three visits to the Americas, and died of pleurisy as he was about to set out on a fourth expedition. He left about 6,000 drawings which are now in the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The present work was based on a set of copies of a portion of these drawings made by Claude Aubriet for Boerhaave in 1733. 'In his preface Burman relates how the materials descended into his hands. Unfortunately, Burman knew only these illustrations and was unacquainted with Plumier's descriptions in Paris... Burmann gives Plumier's original names in the descriptions, but adds those of his own time, keying them to Linnaeus' works when he can.' (Hunt). Hunt 554; Nissen BBI 1547; Stafleu & Cowan IV,8069.
