CINGOLANI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA (fl. 1692-1704). Catasto Generale Della Misura, Planta, e Descrizione di tutte le Tenure Spettanti all' Appalto dell' Alumiere, e delle Fabriche esistenti, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER.

2° (490 x 370mm). 60 leaves. Half-title, title set within an elaborate cartouche incorporating the arms of Pope Innocent XII and Cardinal Corsini, a single-page general plan of the district of Alumiere, 21 double-page plans each comprising a detailed birds-eye view of the terrain and corresponding plan showing workings for the computations of the area, each with wind-rose and scale bar, both set in 'marbled' cartouches, the scale bar incorporating a small pot, (the symbol of the Pignatelli family), one plan folding with paper extensions, double-page general view of Alumiere and surrounding mines, single-page drawing of a holly branch as an endpiece, one double-page and 3 single-page drawings of buildings in Alumiere and Tolfa combining both ground plans and elevations, each plan or drawing with accompanying text leaves, 1p text on the Alum fabrication process, 2pp table at end. (Some light discoloration and spotting, light stain at upper margin gutter). Contemporary panelled goatskin, with central arms of Pope Innocent XII, foliate cornerpieces, the spine in 8 compartments with foliate tools (spine restored at head and foot). Provenance: Pope Innocent XII (binding); by descent to Prince Diego Pignatelli di Cavaniglia (armorial bookplate).
AN IMPORTANT MINING SURVEY OF THE PAPAL LANDS IN THE VICINITY OF ALUMIERE in the Tolfa mountains near Civitavecchia and Tolfa, 30 miles northwest of Rome, providing a detailed record of the alunite (alumstone) mines in the area. Alunite was first mined in the area of Tolfa in the 15th century, it occurs in volcanic rocks and from it alum can be extracted. Alum was an important coating for sizing papers or making cloth fibres more absorbent to dye, and was useful revenue for the Vatican. This detailed survey was made by Cingolani for Pope Innocent XII (Antonio Pignatelli, 1615-1700) and commissioned through the Treasurer-General of the Vatican, Cardinal Lorenzo Corsini (1652-1720, later Pope Clement XII), and was himself a great book and map collector. Pope Innocent XII was noted for his reforming zeal, and had ordained that no Pope should give offices, lands or revenues to any relative. This survey may have formed part of broader analysis of the economic potential of the Papal estates. Cinogolani is also known for a survey of the Campagna of Rome published in 6 sheets by Paluzzi in Rome, 1692, (Frutaz CCI).
