2° (384 x 242mm). Engraved additional title by Romeyn de Hooghe, portrait of the dedicatee Pope Clement X, 26 engraved plates, plans and maps, 13 folding, 2 double-page, 19 illustrations. (Some light spotting and browning, folding plate between N2 and N3 and large folding plan after V1 with clean tears just affecting image area.) 18th-century mottled calf, uniform with lots 67-68, 70-73 (rebacked, later endpapers). Provenance: Antony David (early inscription on title 'Antonii David et Amicorum'). FIRST EDITION of a work which resulted from Kircher's curiosity about Rome and the surrounding region (or Latium as it was known in antiquity). Caillet 5777; Cicognara 3578; Olschki 17342.
