2° (535 x 350mm). Text in French. Engraved frontispiece with Atlas supporting a planispherical world map, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette incorporating arms of George I, engraved portrait of George I by B. Picart, dedication page with engraved headpiece and initial, 28 double-page engraved charts, one folding, two folding plates of fortification plans, each on 2 sheets joined, all hand-coloured in a contemporary hand, mounted on guards throughout. (Light mottled browning to preliminary and text leaves, repairs at fold of world map, a few tears, most repaired, to map of Europe and fortifcation plates.) Contemporary Dutch mottled calf gilt, sides panelled with roll-tooled borders, central foliate arabesque enclosing Atlas, globe ornaments placed at angles of the panels, spine in 9 compartments, titled in the second, the others with repeat globe ornament (neatly repaired at spine and corners). Provenance: Libreria Feroni (armorial bookplate pasted inside upper cover).

A FINE TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF RENARD'S SEA-ATLAS. The charts in this copy are fine, strongly inked impressions, and were adapted from the plates used by Frederik de Wit to issue his own maritime atlas of c.1675. A popular sea atlas amongst Dutch mariners, Renard's work was re-issued in 1739, 1745 and in various editions up until 1802. The twin-hemispherical world map, Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula is the second state of de Wit's map (Shirley 444). The planispherical map used for the frontispiece is similar to Jacob Robyn's map, Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn of 1696. Curiously Renard's version also acts as an index, marked with the numbers of the map sheets and text pages as appropriate. Renard has cleverly combined both index and frontispiece. Koeman IV, Ren I; NMM 3, 264; cf. Phillips Atlases 559.
