Contemporary sheep, covers with gilt-stamped arms of Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) and his first wife, Marie de Barbançon de Cany [Olivier 216.5], spine lettered in one compartment, the remainder gilt-tooled with the cypher 'IAM' [Jacques-Auguste-Marie] (arms on lower cover affected by scuff mark, upper joints rubbed and slightly split, spine chipped at head). Provenance: J.A. de Thou (binding) -- Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1685, 'Bibliotheca Colbertina' inscription at head of title) -- Richard Heber (1773-1833, stamp on front free endpaper). Third edition, following the editions of 1507 and 1514, with a remarkable pedigree. Adams C-906.
