4° (203 x 148mm). Ruled in red. (Light thumb-soiling of title and preliminaries.) Contemporary black goatskin, double gilt panel of dotted lines, fillets and floral roll, both panels with floral corner- and side-pieces, gilt spine compartments, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (rubbed at extremities). Provenance: Mary of Modena (1658-1718), Queen Consort of James II (according to a contemporary manuscript note on front blank: 'The Books which remained at Whitehall in the privat Closett belonging to Queen Mary, the wife of King James II, when shee went away from thence December the 10th 1688, were some time after sold to a book Seller: And this was one of them') -- J.B. Daniel (crayon and pencil inscriptions).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Originally published in 1521. Although there are no indications of Royal provenance on the binding, the ownership of 'Queen Mary' has been diligently recorded, possibly by the 'book Seller' who purchased her library. Lord Perth described this book as 'not strictly representative of my collection, but the provenance, with its connections to the Stuart line and to the Jacobite rebellions, make it in a sense Scottish.' Wing H-1468.
