A LACQUER TABIKUSHIBAKO (TRAVELLING COIFFURE BOX)
Edo Period (Mid-17th century)
Rectangular, with flush fitting lid and rounded corners, decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and hirame, cut foil and inlaid in mother of pearl, the exterior with four lobed panels depicting a farmer with an ox laden with wheatsheafs, a river landscape, ducks among reeds, a pavilion among pinetrees, the cover with a pavilion in a river landscape, all bordered with a geometric design in mother of pearl, the front with a drawer with a sparse nashiji interior and with engraved silver ring fitting, the interior with scholar seated beneath bamboo playing a koto, with some old damage and restoration

Lot Essay

This box retains certain features of the earlier Nanban style, including the use of mother of pearl in geometric border. However, the Kano School design of the panels suggests a date twoards the middle of the 17th century.
