A GERMAN GILTWOOD CHAIR

The outscrolled back with tablet toprail centred by a lotus flower and flanked by anthemion, the stiles carved with lotus, the padded back and drop-in seat covered in red satin decorated with laurels, the seat- rails carved with berried foliage issuing from a central lotus flower on scrolling legs headed by lion masks with acanthus head-dress and terminating in paw feet, stamped I.V. RAAB, with remains of paper label

Lot Essay

This princely chair was executed by the Frankfurt chair-maker Johann Valentin Raab (1777-1839), whose most significant commission was the furniture he made for the Schloss in Würzburg between 1807 and 1809. A closely related armchair in the Frankfurter Historisches Museum, is illustrated in H. Kreisel/G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, p. 81 and p. 98, fig. 499.
