A BRUSSELS HISTORICAL TAPESTRY
First quarter 17th century, by Nicasius Aerts
Woven in wools and silk, probably depicting an episode from 'The War of Troy', with a group of men kneeling before a General and his soldiers in a landscape with soldiers, peasants and a castle in the background, within a wide border with bands of foliage, and large figural clasps and grotesque masks to the corners and centre of sides and the outer slip, with Brussels town mark and maker's monogram, reweaving particularly to the brown areas

Lot Essay

NICASIUS AERTS
Born into a family of Brussels weavers, Nicasius Aerts obtained the weaver's privileges in 1613 and died in 1627. A War of Troy set of tapestries by Aerts is in the Soprintendenza in Turin.
