This beautiful relief, delicately executed on a small scale, is extremely closely related to a relief depicting Anna Selbdritt (see comparative illustration) executed in 1513 . The latter, housed in the Klosterkirche in Ingolstadt, Germany, was formerly attributed to Matthias Kreniss, but has more recently been included in the catalogue of the Louvre exhibition on late gothic German wood sculpture attributed to Leinberger (Louvre, loc. cit).
Hans Leinberger was one of the most important exponents of the Bavarian school of wood sculpture in the second and third decades of the 16th century. His work is typified by delicate facial features and stylised treament of drapery which includes both passages of extreme linearity, and idiosyncratically crinkled folds. His work has parallels with the work of the painter Albrecht Altdorfer (d. 1538).
