Lot Essay

Don Fernando Àlvarez de Toledo, third Duke of Alba (1507-1582), was appointed governor-general of the Spanish Netherlands in 1567 and was noted for his fanatical devotion to both the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church. His suppression of the Protestant rebels in the Netherlands was considered to be so cruel that he was recalled by his superiors to Spain.
