Lot Essay

This type of elegant brass-enriched dining-chair was developed in the 1790s, and various examples can be found in virtually all the Romanov palaces and in the collections of the Russian élite. A set of related armchairs is in the study at Pavlovsk, illustrated in E. Ducamp, Pavlovsk, the Palace and the Park, Paris, 1993, ppp. 162-163, and a further trellis-back chair at Monplaisir, is illustrated in A. Chenevière, Russian Furniture, London, 1988, p. 121, fig. 104. A set of six closely related side chairs and a set of related armchairs were sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, lot 495 ($48,875;£ 29,442) and lot 470A ($48,875;£29,442) respectively.
