The silk-suspension movement striking on a bell, signed 'LECLERE', the silvered dial with roman hours set in a block surmounted by the figure of the blind Belisarius, begging for alms with his young companion, the bronzed plinth centred by a martial trophy of arms, with gilt acanthus cast borders and raised on four scrolled acanthus feet

Lot Essay

Belisarius, a general under Justinian, was one of the greatest military commanders of his time, the spearhead of Byzantium's attempts to rebuild the Roman Empire. His very successes however, made him many enemies. Incriminated in a plot against Justinian, his eyes were put out on the Emperor's orders in 561 A.D. According to the historian Procopius, Belisarius was stripped of all his possessions, and reduced to begging in the streets of Byzantium
