Lot Essay

A convict artist who trained as a miniaturist and engraver in London, Edgar was convicted of robbery in 1825 and sentenced to death which was commuted to transportation for life, to Sydney, where he arrived in 1826. His skills were quickly appreciated as he was immediately assigned to Augustus Earle to assist him with his lithographic 'Views of Australia'. He also taught painting and Samuel Elyard was one of his pupils. He was granted a ticket of leave in 1838 and a conditional pardon in 1846. He is mainly known for his portraits and miniatures
