Since 1926, and likely as a result of the success brought forth by the painting titled Flower Day in the United States--currently in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art--and one highly praised in the First Pan-American Exhibition of Oil Painting, Diego Rivera began to paint numerous portraits of indigenous children. Accepted immediately by the market in both Mexico and the United States, Rivera, who was by then becoming a notable figure in the world of art, found a way to promote his heritage while gaining unprecedented commercial success.

Within the tradition of social realism, Diego Rivera's portraiture of children excels as Mexico's most dignified expression of indigenous art. Within this tradition, Niña con muñeca, is a magnificent production where the naturalism of a central figure is mastered in the utmost pictorial quality. The sitter in the present painting is very probably the daughter of one of Rivera's employees, and not a portrait composed from memory. The centered composition and the transversal angle, even the greens and golden tones allude to the well-known Portrait of Guadalupe Marín from 1938 (currently in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City).
