Astrojildo Pereira, founder of the Partido Comunista do Brasil, was an intellectual and art connoisseur who befriended many of the leaders of the Brazilian Modernist Movement. Among these friends was Emiliano Di Cavalcanti from whom he received Vaso de flores and many other paintings as gifts. Their relationship grew even closer when they both lived at a pension at Rua Teodoro Sampaio in São Paulo. Di Cavalcanti signed the painting right before his friend's passing in 1965, during a luncheon at the house of Astrojildo's family.
