Lot Essay

Two other colocynth gourds of quite similar shape have been sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 29 and 30 October 1995, Lot 515 and 31 October 2000, Lot 1015. See also Arts from the Scholar's Studio, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong 1984, p.274, no.273 where the author suggested that these were travelling containers for water and wine storage.
