Lot Essay

This is a type of dresser found in many Cornish cottage and farmhouse homes in the 19th century. The maker's price list found on the top left drawers is dated 1903, presumably the date that the dresser was made. This elaborate label itemising all of the furniture made by this firm (est. 1871 at the Cabinet Works, The Castle, Liskeard) provides a unique insight into the range and nomenclature of furniture making in Cornwall.

This dresser provides the most significant provenance for a piece of Cornish cottage furniture yet recorded.
