Lot Essay

This dresser displays two distinct characteristics of the West Country region, namely the small central drawer in the base and the bead moulding to the front edges of the side sections.

This dresser design is closely similar to those made by West Coutry settlers on the east coast of Newfoundland in the first half of the 19th century. This particular dresser was included in the exhibition of Newfoundland furniture entitled Routes in 1994 where it was shown with an example made in the town of Trinity East at Trinity Bay, the earliest major settlement in Newfoundland; it served to illustrate the clear influence between the West Country and Newfoundland furniture.
