Characteristic of Scottish chests of this type are the integral frieze to the lid and the small internal till and drawers. The kist was the most common form of storage item in Scottish homes during the 18th and 19th centuries and would have been used for clothes, household linens, even barley and oatmeal; farm workers who left home to work on farms usually would have two kists, one for clothing and one for food.
