The back panel depicting a mermaid-like figure holding a dove, below a foliate toprail and arched cresting profusely carved with a mother and child flanked by two naked figures and outer birds, the downswept arms raised on fluted columns and the moulded seat above plain rails, on turned legs, lacking stretchers, the cresting strenghtened to the reverse with metal straps

This distinctive and unusual chair is almost certainly from the West Country and possibly from the Salisbury area. There is a well-documented group of individualistic chairs from the area with high backs and arched crestings; a chair bearing the arms of the city of Salisbury is illustrated in Victory Chinnery, Oak Furniture in the British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, plate 1 (opposite the frontispiece), and has very similar fluted arm supports to the chair offered here.

The back of the cresting is indistinctly signed in ink '...ARIE PEEPING 1649'
