The body cast with the date 1682, and the initials in triad S over I.I., intersected by eagle displayed and angel motifs

Lot Essay

This is the only recorded mortar by Neale to bear the date of 1682. The double-headed bird was also used by Neale on a mortar dated 1676, formerly in the John Fardon Collection, sold in these rooms 1 May 1996, lot 215.
