Cast with the inscription THOMAS CHEESE MADE ME, and further cast with the owner's initials R.B. and the date to the rim 1633, the rim with band of trailing foliate ornament, the inscription intersected by barred 'T' motifs, fleur de lis within a rectangle, and the Bury St. Edmunds crown, the words of the inscription sandwiched by panels of conforming foliate trailing ornament, old vertical crack to the rim

Thomas Cheese, bell founder in Bury St Edmunds (Edmondsbury), flourished c.1603-1633.

The crossed arrows within the crown symbolise the martyrdom of St Edmund. See lot 452 in the present collection for another mortar by this founder.
