Lot Essay

At the date of the present mortar the foundry was in the ownership of Anthony Bartlett (1640-75). Bartlett inherited the foundry as a minor on the death of his father Thomas Bartlett in 1632. During his minority the foundry was managed by his foreman John Clifton from 1632-1640. It is not improbable that he carried on in this role until the date cast on this example.
