A very similar mortar (possibly the present lot), is illustrated by Peacock, Florence Metal Mortars, the Chemist and Druggist, January 27, 1900, fig.3., where it is ascribed to the time of James I. The mortar however is more stylistically similar to the productions of one of the 18th century founders, such as Joshua Beardmore of London.
