Lot Essay

A mortar with the same portrait busts and equestrian medallions is illustrated in Peta Mottures Bells and Mortars V&A Catalogue, page 88. The V&A example is inscribed to the rim MARIO LILLA, and the decoration differs in that the medallions and portraits are seperated by pilasters of standing figures bereft from the present example. No identification is given for the equestrian medallion or the portrait bust.
