The Observer reviewer commented on Harvey's 1932 solo show at Barbizon House, 'with all his conscientiousness of representation, he entirely subordinates portraiture to pictorial organisation, and scenes of cottage or kitchen life treated more or less in the manner of the eighteenth century conversation piece. It is in this latter genre that Mr Harvey scores his most striking successess, among which must be counted: The Shawl, The Dresser, The Mirror Picture and The Doorstep Picture'.

The scene depicted in the present work is the sitting room at Maen Cottage, Newlyn, where Harold and Gertrude Harvey set up home after their marriage in 1911.
