Painted in 1942, A Board Meeting belongs to a group of works by Lowry depicting interior scenes of meetings populated exclusively by businessmen in dark suits. These works, which include The Creditors' Meeting, 1944 (private collection) and The Boardroom, circa 1920 (The City of Salford) are autobiographical in that they refer to Lowry's employment as a rent collector for the Pall Mall Property Company. Although this facet of Lowry's life was only known to a small circle of friends and colleagues, it was not only crucial in enabling him to make ends meet when sales were poor, but also facilitated his contact with the wide variety of people that populate his paintings.
