Bruce Laughton (private correspondence) has commented on the present work, 'In my opinion the style of this painting accords with the signature of Philip Wilson Steer. Certain works such as The Incoming Tide of 1888-89, and Near Walberswick of 1891 are similar to this rather open, sketchy style as opposed to his more finished works of the period. I am not prepared to speculate on the location of the seaside resort with its row of bathing huts'.
