Lot Essay

Seago was one of twelve artists invited to paint their impressions of the Coronation of Her Majesty The Queen in June 1953. It gave the artist an unparalleled opportunity to indulge his taste for pageantry against the very familiar background of London locations. The resulting canvases and watercolours he produced all capture the festive atmosphere of that summer.

The Royal Family has a large collection of works by Edward Seago. During his lifetime the artist established a tradition in which he gave presents of his paintings to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother each Christmas and on her birthday.
