This oil sketch is one of two Windsor Castle interiors painted by Orpen in 1910, recording King Manoel of Portugal receiving the Garter from King Edward VII. Orpen records them in his Studio Book as 'two sketches Windsor Castle (Interiors)', sold in 1916 for £105. The sketches were sold to Orpen's lover and patron, Mrs St George, and one was sold at her sale at Sotheby's, London, 26 July 1939, lot 97: the other work has previously been untraced.

King Manoel II (1889-1932) was appointed to the Order of the Garter on 19 November 1909, the King was subsequently deposed on 4 October 1910, and came to live in exile in England in 1913.

We are very grateful to The Orpen Research Project for their help in preparing this catalogue entry.
