Lot Essay

Minton travelled to Corsica in August 1947 with the writer Alan Ross to produce illustrations for Time Was Away: A Notebook in Corsica, with spine and typography designed by Keith Vaughan. The heat and light of the Mediterranean encouraged Minton's use of rich blacks to convey the deep shadows and slightly sinister atmosphere of the towns and villages he visited (see F. Spalding, Dance till the Stars Come Down, London, 1991, pp. 109-110).
