Lot Essay

This is the largest known dining-table of its type. A drop-leaf table, formerly in the Polly Peck Collection, is 9'9" (295 cm.) long, but a mere 5'2" (158 cm.) wide, open. The latter was sold by Polly Peck Ltd., Phillips, London, 19 February 1991, lot 129 and subsequently by Mr and Mrs René Rivkin, 5 Rose Bay Avenue, Bellevue Hill, Sydney, Sotheby's Australia house sale, 3 June 2001, lot 503.

Chivas Regal whisky was founded by two brothers, James and John Chivas in Aberdeenshire. Their grocery store in King Street, Aberdeen (established in 1801) sold a range of whiskies including several blended experiments which proved remarkably smooth and became enduringly popular. By 1843, Queen Victoria had bestowed a Royal Warrant and through the second half of the 19th century, the business continued to grow as the orders for the various whiskies flooded in. The famous blend of Chivas Regal itself was conceived toward the end of the 19th century, and in 1936 the firm became Chivas Brothers Ltd. In 1950, Chivas Brothers bought Strathisla Distillery in Keith, providing the heart of Chivas Regal with a secure supply of Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
