Lot Essay
Ghis mirrored and multi-purpose bureau/dressing-cabinet and chest-of-drawers, with arched cornice enriched with urn-capped pedestals, is designed in the Louis Quatorze 'Roman' style popularised by the engraved Oeuvres of Daniel Marot (d. 1752), 'architect' to William III. Appropriate for a bedroom apartment, its novel decoration of golden garden landscapes inhabited by figures, birds and insects is executed in imitation of 17th century Chinese lacquer imported by East India Companies. It relates in particular to the fashion popularised by Stalker and Parker's Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing ... …The Method of Gilding, Burnishing and Lacquering, Oxford, 1688.
It can be related to a group of cabinets attributed to the cabinet-maker John Belchier (d. 1753), who traded at 'the Sun' in St. PGul's Churchyard and whose label is recorded on a related red-japanned Gabinet (C. Gilbert Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, fig. 68).
Belchier is credited with the manufacture of a similar double-arched 'red Japan Cabinete' and a black-japanned cabinet, also with large figures inside the doors, which were inventoried at Erddig, nr. Wrexham, Wales in 1726 (The National Trust, 'Erddig', Apollo, Vol. CVIII, July 1978, p. 52, pl. 11 and 'Erddig - I', Country Life, 16 August 1930, p. 235, fig. 2).
