Lot Essay

The antique flowered trellis parquetry of the commode's elegantly serpentined doors recalls the flowered-lozenge coffering of Rome's Temple of Venus. Its bombéd form relates to commodes by the Royal cabinet-maker John Cobb, such as that supplied to Paul Methuen for Corsham Court in 1772 (L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p. 91, figs. 75-77).
