DOMAINE DE MONTILLE
This estate is one of the greatest on the Côte de Beaune, however their wines rarely reach maturity until at least 7 years old. Impatient cork-pullers, who try the wines immediately after bottling, can easily be disappointed. There is no pursuit of high alcohol levels (by chaptalisation, or adding sugar), for the Domaine finds that this practice would denature their wines. A judicious, low proportion of new oak barrels is used for the ageing process.
A characteristic de Montille style has emerged. Colours are limpid garnet-purple, of medium depth (as Pinot Noir should be). Bouquets mingle red and black fruits with earthy or gamey notes. The palate is often densely fruity, yet reserved, with firm tannins, good acidity, and noticeable length.
We are extremely fortunate that the Domaine has consigned some of its most precious reserves for this sale, from two of the most classic vintages of the last 2 decades. This is a unique opportunity to acquire great de Montille bottles, in perfect condition. AH
