SYNDICATE FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE CLOS-DE-VOUGEOT
In 1998, the Syndicate for the Defense of the Clos-de-Vougeot determined to celebrate the 900th Anniversary of the foundation of the Abbey of Cîteaux. This had taken place in AD 1098, in marshy reed-beds to the east of where the Vouge stream breaks through a buckled, limestone escarpment. These hillsides were at the time still covered in briars, brambles and box-trees.

The Syndicate determined on a fund-raising exercise, the proceeds of which would go to support the work of the Monastery today. 27 owners of vines within the Clos-de-Vougeot each donated wine from the abundantly ripe 1997 vintage, to create two barrels of a special cuvée. One barrel was sold (for FF 200,000.00, ie #130/magnum, before tending, bottling, shipping costs etc.) to a group of Burgundian négoçiants at the Hospices de Nuits charity wine auction, in 1999. The second was aged in François Frères new oak, within the confines of the Clos (as in the old days), from which 150 magnums were produced. This is a unique Clos-Vougeot of exceptional quality and classic proportions, so we are led to understand.

The wine will receive its first public showing at our Burgundy Masterclass in London on 6 November, in the presence of François Labet, owner of Ch de la Tour, who tended and bottled it. We are honoured to be offering - the proceeds going to the Abbaye de Cîteaux charity - the first 12 of these rare, estate-bottled 1997 magnums.

The growers whose donated wines form this cuvée are : R Arnoux, Bertagna, A. Bichot, Bouchard Père, Castagnier-Vadey, Henri Clerc, Ch de Marsannay, Ch de la Tour, J Drouhin, Drouhin-Laroze, R. Dubois, Dufouleur Frères, P. Engel, J Faiveley, Génot-Boulanger, F. Grivot, F. Gerbet, M. Gros, Haegelen-Jayer, Chantal Lescure, Méo-Camuzet, Georges Mugneret, Pierre Ponnelle, Jacques Prieur, Jean Raphet, H. Rebourseau, Thomas. AH
