Lot Essay

The pencil work in the present watercolour was executed by Thomas Girtin with the wash being applied by Turner and was executed when Turner and Girtin were in the drawing academy of Dr Thomas Monro. Farington, also associated with the academy, wrote in his Diary of 11 November 1798: 'Girtin drew the outlines and Turner washed in the effects'.

We are grateful to Andrew Wilton for his help in prepraing this catalogue entry.
