We are grateful to Greg Smith for pointing out that the present drawing should be entitled From the Villa at Posillipo, A View from the Villa Belvedere and relates to the second volume of drawings by John Roberts Cozens at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. The present drawing was probably executed from a tracing of the Whitworth drawing, which is now in the Beaumont Album of tracings at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven.

Lot Essay

The pencil work in the present watercolour was executed by Thomas Girtin with the wash being applied by Turner. For a note on Turner and Girtin in the academy of Dr Thomas Monro see lot 17.
