Mortlock was a patron of Downman, from whom he commissioned a pair of oil paintings of himself and his wife Elizabeth with their son, three-quarter-length. John Mortlock lived at Benet Street Cambridge and Abington Hall and was a banker by profession, he married Elizabeth Harrison in 1776. He represented Cambridge in Parliament in 1784 and was mayor thirteen times. Downman was working in Cambridge in 1777 where he executed portraits of both University and townsfolk.
