Charles Turner is primarily known as an engraver. He executed a number of mezzotints after J.M.W. Turner, with whom he enjoyed an enduring but turbulent friendship. They collaborated over Turner's Liber Studiorum, but after the publication of the fourth part in 1810 the two men quarrelled and the arrangement was discontinued. However Turner engraved five mezzotints for The Rivers of England in the 1820s. J.M.W. Turner appointed him executor of his will and a trustee of his proposed Charitable Institution. The present drawing would have been done from the life and another version is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, dated 1842. Charles Turner subsequently produced a mezzotint, showing the sitter three-quarter-length in 1856.
