Lot Essay

The present watercolour dates from circa 1794 and was executed when Turner was touring Kent and Sussex, probably in response to a commission from John Walker for views to be engraved for the Copper-Plate Magazine. It is stylistically similar to the drawings executed on his tour of the Midlands in the summer of 1794 with its distinctive series of dots, dashes and curls, which capture the architecture and nature of the buildings.

We are grateful to Andrew Wilton for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
