Lot Essay

The Broken Bridge exemplifies the larger watercolours that Palmer was producing during the second half of the 1840s. It has been suggested that the figure of the woman with a pitcher is reminiscent of that which appears in the later etching by Palmer The Early Ploughman of 1861.
