Bolton Abbey was a popular subject with de Wint and he exhibited views in 1839, 1845 and 1846 at the Old Water-colour Society and on account of its size and high degree of finish the present watercolour is probably one of those exhibited, Other views of Bolton Abbey are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Leeds City Art Gallery and Bradford City Art Gallery.
The Roundell family of Gledstone, who previously owned this watercolour, were among de Wint's most regular patrons; the daughter of the house, Miss Anne Roundell, is also recorded as one of the best of his pupils (see H. Smith, Peter de Wint 1784-1849, London, 1982, p. 85 and 89).
